Magazine Cover Conventions

Typical magazine conventions have the masthead, or the title of the Magazine and the top, they frequently appear at the top left hand corner, examples of these are NME Magazine and Q Magazine. Examples of the Masthead being at the top are Kerrang, Empire and Mojo Magazine. These however are specific to Music and Film. Educational and College Magazines are still similar with the Masthead at the top. These sorts of Magazines also share logos similar to the Brand, such as NME has a TV Channel, Website, and a Magazine all sporting the same logo.

Another convention is having a model on the front page, this could vary from a Student of the College for their Magazine or a Rock Star from a Band. Also depending on the person on the cover, they could cover up the actual title, this is so the person viewing it would see the model first as opposed to the title. Often the person on the cover is prone to controversy at the time or even an image considered controversial, as seen with Amy Winehouse on the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine or Beth Ditto naked on the cover of NME Magazine. But most often than not, the person on the cover of the magazine is popular at the time, usually with a new album coming out, or a new film coming up.

Magazines also frequently feature a list of what’s inside at the very top, usually inside a bar spanning across the magazine. This is for when the Magazine is on a rack, the person could see what's inside without even picking it up, this makes the magazine more tempting to pick up especially if the viewer sees something they have a particular interest in, like a certain band, or film.

Something else is that a lot of Magazines, especially music and film magazines will frequently offer Posters and other things free, these are often advertised on the cover, along with small snapshots of the posters included, often in one of the corners of the cover.
There is often a main headline included across the front of the Magazine. Usually the name of the person being interviewed, also a quote of what the person has said inside the Magazine, example being with the Beth Ditto on NME image below.

Also usually on the left or right hand side there is a list similar to the one found at the top. Usually saying what can be found in a magazines, an example being “Interviews with * band name *” etc.
